- paper
Folio (437 x 267mm.), engraved title-page, 54 pages of text, 17 folding or double-page engraved charts on 11 sheets, text in modern half calf over marbled paper boards, the charts housed in separate portfolio, title-page supplied from another copy, a few maps strengthened at folds or margins, some maps slightly spotted or stained
John Seller was the first English chart-publisher to attempt to break the Dutch monopoly on chart supply into the English market by offering a full range of English chart and pilot books.
His first steps, inevitably, were faltering; his earliest publications, of which this is one, were based on a sequence of Dutch plates supplemented by Seller's own materials. These pilot books tend to vary in contents, but this copy includes eleven map-sheets, including Seller's charts of the British Isles, the Channel, two of the Thames Estuary with East Anglia, the Tyne and Humber Rivers (on one sheet) and the Scilly Isles.
Despite the second version of the title, with the substituted imprint of Seller and partners, the text and charts appear to be the early form of the book.
