Condition
Overall in very good condition. The shade with only 3 visible cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout. All of the "Turtle Back" tiles set within the shade appear original and undisturbed and are in very good condition with no visible cracks or chips. The rare Turtle-Back base is in very good condition. The large inset Turtle-Back tiles appear original and undisturbed and are in very good condition with no visible cracks or chips. The Turtle-Back tiles in both the shade and base are beautifully iridized, and when viewed with reflected light remit strong luminous color and a range of brilliant hues. The gilt surfaces of the base show surface wear and rubbing with some associated losses to the gilt finish, and with scattered areas of surface soiling and discoloration consistent with age and gentle handling. This lamp was originally designed as an oil lamp and was later converted to electricity. The lamp retains its original oil canister, and the riser and socket cluster are period Tiffany components. The top of the oil canister, riser and socket cluster have been brush gilt with a corresponding gilt patina to the base. With a reproduction drop finial (not shown in the catalogue illustration). A very harmonious and desirable shade and base pairing displaying strong color and vigorous mottling to the shade. When viewed firsthand, the shade is slightly more subtle and nuanced than seen in the catalogue photography, which is slightly too red and over saturated.
