Condition

Overall in very good condition. This lamp is being consigned by descendants of the original owners who acquired the lamp directly from Tiffany Studios, and by all accounts the shade, base, finial and base components have all originated together since the period. The shade with approximately 23 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, which is a relatively low number in proportion to the vast number of glass tiles which were required to execute this large and complex shade. All of these hairlines appear stable. With surface soiling throughout to the recessed folds of the glass and to the recessed contours of the shade leading. The rare "Openwork Arch" base displays an exceptionally deep and rich green and russet brown patina. The patinated bronze surfaces throughout with some light surface scratches and wear, light rubbing, and with surface soiling to the recessed contours and to the top surface of the interior base plate, all consistent with age and gentle handling. All of the sockets and paddle switches appear original and undisturbed, with some expected wear to the patina on the exterior socket shells. The period "Tear-Drop" finial displays a closely corresponding patina to the base. On the underside of the base, two of the six small screws which secure the base plate are presently missing; the base plate is entirely secure and if desired these screws can be easily replaced. A stunning example of this iconic Peony model, displaying an outstanding and deeply saturated glass selection. The lamp presents beautifully in person with rich luminous color. The upper background passages are articulated in deep tones of ultramarine and cobalt and create an effective contrast to the rich field of red and magenta peony blossoms. The Peony centers, as well as the lower background passages, are articulated in striking hues of orange and yellow-orange, again presenting a highly successful juxtaposition of color. It is clear that the glass in this shade was selected and assembled by a true colorist. When viewing this lamp firsthand, the glass is more nuanced and richer than seen in the catalogue illustrations.
