Catalogue Note
Quinn has become known for his large scale landscape paintings threaded through with intriguing narratives relating to European history, mythology and architecture. His work invites the viewer to consider what the splendid vistas before them might hide. Drawing from famous works from art history by artists such as Poussin or Caspar David Friedrich, Quinn re appropriates the painting by re contextualising it; sliding in various artistic and literary references. In so doing, Quinn both questions how we the viewer looks at art and appreciate it, but also, how we engage with the past and the roots of our cultural identity. It is not necessary however, for the viewer to identify all of the references outlined in Quinn's paintings in order to enjoy them - the works are a rich, painterly feast that arrest and engage the eye. If the viewer should choose to look further though, he will find amongst the symbols and shrines, a body of work that is poetic, inspiring and always deeply thought-provoking.
