Condition

This early contact print, on lightly-textured double-weight paper with a faint surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. There is faint, warm-toned discoloration in the upper portion of the image. The black margin edges are worn, and the corners are bumped. As is characteristically seen in Abbott's 'Changing New York' prints from the period, there are small clamp impressions in the black margins from processing. Upon very close examination, the following are visible: a few tiny impressions that do not appear to break the emulsion; and a small, fingerprint-like abrasion near the lower edge of the image. The reverse of the print is appropriately age-darkened and lightly soiled. The 'Changing New York' caption stamp on the reverse is annotated in ink with the following information: Title: 'John Watts Statue: From Trinity Courtyard, Looking Toward One Wall Street' Place: 'Manhattan' Neg. # '28 [ ]' Code: 'I A 3 IB' Date: 'March 1, 1938'

Catalogue Note

The imposing Art Deco limestone building at One Wall Street pictured here was built in 1931 for the Irving Trust Company by Ralph Walker of the architectural firm Voorhees, Gmelin and Walker.  Dramatic by design, with its curtain-like exterior of limestone, it continues to tower above both old and new in the Financial District, including the New York Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, and the fifteen-foot-high bronze monument to lawyer and philanthropist John Watts (1749-1836) on the south side of Trinity churchyard.
