Description

  • gold, enamel, ruby
Designed as a gold badge commemorating 20 years of active service for Lieutenant Joseph F. Grady of the FDNY, the center accented by a blue enamel ring centering the number 20 set in 20 round rubies, the reverse inscribed, 'Presented to Lieutenant Joseph F. Grady by the officers and members of the engine co 279. April 15, 1927, 1907-1927.'  Together with a brown leather case embossed with the FDNY emblem.

Condition

In good condition. The rubies are medium very slightly purplish red and range from lightly to moderately included. Most stones exhibit minor abrasions under magnification and one ruby has a significant chip. The enamel exhibits some spots of minor damage under magnification, but it appears intact when viewed with the naked eye. Bears a nice heft. All of the inscriptions are hand engraved on the reverse. The leather pouch shows age and wear and it is torn on the upper flap by the snap.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
