Catalogue Note

Canella was born in Verona, the son of the architect Giovanni Canella.  He travelled to Spain in the early 1820s, and then settled in France from 1823 to 1833, where he exhibited at the Salons of 1826 and 1827. He then returned to Italy, first to Milan, and became a professor at the Academy of Venice.  He was best known as a painter of vedute, depicting cityscapes and animated street scenes incorporating topographical elements.

These charming, postcard-like views in Spain depict the royal palace of the Escorial and the Convento de los Agustinos Recoletos.  Built by King Philip II, the Escorial is located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, northwest of Madrid.  The vast complex, situated at the foot of Mt. Abantos in the Sierra de Guadarrama range, was begun in 1563 and completed in 1584.  The Convento de los Agustinos Recoletos was located in Madrid and its impressive façade is seen here in the distance, from along the Paseo de Recoletos.  The convent was built in the 17th century on land ceded by Doña Eufrasia de Guzmán, Princess of Asculi.  The building was demolished in the 19th century and is now the site of the National Library and the Archaeological Museum.
