Condition
Under naked eye the painting appears in very good condition ; it is on its original canvas and slightly dirty. A thin net of cracks is visible but is not disturbing the view of the subject
Under UV light the work appears in places under a thick green and old varnish which suggest the painting was formerly cleaned. A few tiny retouches are scattered over the surface

Catalogue Note
Seymourina Poirson, née Cuthbertson était l'épouse de Paul Poirson, demi-frère du peintre Maurice Poirson. Elevée par son parrain lord Hertford, et sa marraine, Mme de Bréart, elle serait la fille naturelle du demi-frère de Lord Hertford, Henry Seymour Conway, qui avait été surnommé "Milord l'Arsouille". Lord Hertford possédait une exceptionnelle collection de tableaux qui se trouvaient dans sa propriété de Bagatelle. A sa mort pendant la guerre de 1870, son testament donnait Richard Wallace comme légataire universel . C'est ainsi que la Wallace collection à Londres fut constituée.Seymourina hérita toutefois de quelques tableaux dont celui présenté ici. Elle est représentée sur un pur-sang, Tattersalls, que Lord Hertford avait acquis sans le savoir contre Napoléon III pour la somme astronomique de 40 000Fr. Ayant appris le nom du sous-enchérisseur, il l'offrit à l'Empereur mais avant de le livrer aux Tuileries, il en fit faire un portrait par Svertchkov. Seymourina fut choisie pour figurer sur ce portrait de cheval. Un portrait de Seymourina en buste par John Singer Sargent est conservé au Detroit Museum of Art. Le peintre l'avait peint pour payer le loyer de l'atelier qu'il louait à Maurice Poirson lorsqu'il était à Paris.
