Catalogue Note
Un dessin de même sujet, avec variantes, daté 27 7bre 1840, est conservé au musée Victor Hugo à Paris. Le dessin a été exécuté lors d'un voyage de Victor Hugo dans la vallée du Rhin, du 29 août au 2 novembre 1840. le Rhin et ses Burgs dominant le fleuve, inspirèrent à Victor Hugo de nombreux dessins et un livre Le Rhin publié en 1842, dans lequel il évoque avec une lucidité saisissante, l'idée des Etats-Unis d'Europe "L'alliance de la France et de l'Allemagne, c'est la constitution de l'Europe".
