Condition
Under the naked-eye: The painting is overall in moderated satisfactory state of conservation. It has been relined during the first half of the twentieth century. We can see worn places in the trees, a former tear restored in the horses body in the center of the composition, a little scratch in the architecture on the right. There is also two very small lacks.
Under the UV light: There is a visible green and uniform varnish, some retouching in the previously indicated places and some minor ones scattered in the foliage of trees and sky.

Catalogue Note
Bérénice faisait partie d’une riche famille d’Antioche, elle se retrouva, ainsi que sa soeur et sa mère, dans la foi et les préceptes chrétiens. Mais le règne de Dioclétien marqua la persécution des chrétiens, et toutes trois fuirent vers la ville d’Edesse, en Mésopotamie. En 303 son père les dénonca et elles furent arrêtées et emmenées par l’empereur et son armée de soldats vers Hiéraple. Cette vierge et martyre de Mésopotamie est sanctifiée en 304, on la fête le 14 avril.
Notre tableau illustre cet instant dramatique où la sainte, aux côtés de sa mère et sur dénonciation de son père, va être livrée aux armées tyranniques de l’empereur Dioclétien. Sa sœur découvre, effarée, la scène depuis la fenêtre.
L’expressivité de la gestuelle des personnages, retranscrivant leurs émotions propres, le bleu profond du manteau de la sainte, résonnent comme un écho à l’œuvre de l’artiste lyonnais du XVIIe siècle Jacques Stella (1596-1657). Notre artiste s’est sans doute inspiré de la manière de Jacques Stella, si populaire en France et en Italie, mais il a fait preuve d’originalité dans le choix d’un thème très rare, qui ne trouve que peu d’exemples similaires dans la peinture de son temps.
