Portrait of Philip V To the bare eye, the painting is in overall satisfactory state of conservation. It is painted on a thick and very straight plate of copper. The painting has been properly cleaned. Some of the pigments have turned in some small areas of the blue drapery in the lower right corner. Under UV light, the painting appears under a green and uniform varnish. There are quite many limited retouching in the background. There are a small retouch on the model’s forehead and a few others in the blue drapery. Portrait of Marie-Louise Gabrielle of Savoie To the bare eye, the painting is in overall satisfactory state of conservation. It is painted on a perfectly straight plate of copper. Under UV light, there are a few retouching in the background, particularly on the red drapery. A small retouch on the queen’s face, a light retouch on the Infanta’s forehead. There is also some retouching on the handmaiden’s face in the background and on the blue drapery in the lower right corner.

Peintre officiel de la cour de Philippe V et de ses épouses successives Maria-Luisa-Gabriela de Savoie et Isabel de Farnèse à partir de 1712, Miguel-Jacinto Melendez a peint plusieurs portraits du roi ainsi que de sa famille. Artiste plutôt connu pour ses sujets religieux il fut un bon portraitiste très influencé par la génération d’artistes français qui s’installèrent en Espagne à cette époque notamment par Jean Ranc et Michel-Ange Houasse qui peignirent aussi Philippe V et son entourage. 
Issu d’une famille d’artistes des Asturies établie à Madrid, Miguel-Jacinto est le frère aîné du peintre de miniatures Francisco-Antonio et l’oncle du fameux peintre de natures mortes Luis Melendes.
Les touches métalliques utilisées par le peintre sur nos portraits influenceront la peinture espagnole et se retrouveront plus tard chez des artistes comme Luis Paret y Alcazar.

Philippe V de Bourbon est le petit fils de Louis XIV et le premier roi de la dynastie des Bourbons en Espagne. Philippe de France, titré duc d'Anjou succèda à son grand-oncle Charles II, dernier roi d'Espagne de la dynastie des Habsbourg, et devint Felipe de Borbón. Son règne de quarante cinq ans et deux jours est le plus long de la monarchie espagnole.
Le musée du Prado de Madrid conserve les portraits de Philippe V et de sa seconde épouse Isabel par notre peintre (inv P.7603 et P.7604).
