Quiche urns are massive ceramic lidded vessels which feature a deity emerging from the maw of the Sun God, his open mouth representng the entrance to the darkened Underworld. The Jaguar God of the Underworld is one manifestation of the God GIII, part of the divine ancestor trio of the Palenque Gods GI, II and III. The interactions of these deities personified the death and rebirth of the sun in the journey through the Underworld.
