Félix Vallotton and his wife used to spend their summers near the French port city of Honfleur. During these stays, the painter toured the Normandie countryside by bike. These trips inspired delightful studies, which Vallotton kept in his sketchbook. Some of these sketches served as templates for paintings which he later produced using the technique known as “paysage compose” - completing the work in his atelier. During the summer of 1910 he created some exquisite landscape paintings showing intimate scenes such as the work presented here. The work features single-floor farm houses typical of the region, known as “Chaumières”. The steep thatched roofs and the sunlight cast mysterious shadows on the green, close-cropped lawn and on the wall at the left of the painting. The dark shadows in the foreground of the painting form a contrast to the serene tranquility at the heart of the painting, which shows chickens pecking for worms and the farmer holding a bucket receding into the distance.
