Condition

Not relined. Canvas slightly wavy to the upper Part. Minuscule craquelures mainly in the bright Part. Under uv-light scattered retouchings in the sky and a faint retouching along the right edge. Good condition.

Catalogue Note

Das bedeutende Bild lässt Calames' Meisterschaft erkennen, Elemente der Bergwelt zu hochdramatischen Wiedergaben zu verbinden, die - ohne notwendigerweise geographisch lokalisierbar zu sein - doch ganz erheblich zu den Mustern beigetragen haben, unter denen sich das Bild der Alpen in der europäischen Vorstellung festigte. Schäumende Gebirgsbäche, hochragende, einsame Tannen, dräuende Wolken, steile Gipfel: immer wieder fügte Calame in seinen ausgeführten Kompositionen die verschiedenen Komponenten zu einem wirkungsvollen Ganzen zusammen. Von dem hier vorliegenden Bild existiert eine möglicherweise nicht eigenhändige Kopie aus etwas späterer Zeit.
