Not relined. Lightly varnished. Specks of white paint near the book to the lower left. Minuscule accretion near the left neck of the vase. Canvas buckling in the upper left corner. Minor scratch to the wallpaper to the left of the yellow, upward facing flowerhead. No retouchings visible under uv-light. Very good condition.

Die Stillleben waren für Félix Vallotton neben den Landschaftsbildern und den Figurendarstellungen die wichtigste Bildgattung. Ihnen schenkte Vallotton seine besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Jedes seiner Stillleben ist in der Komposition und in der Anordnung der Gegenstände einmalig: In unserem Bild zeigt der Maler einen geschmackvoll zusammengestellten Blumenstrauss in einer grünen Glasvase, auf einem mit Blumenmotiven bedruckten Tischtuch, umgeben von Büchern vor einer violetten Tapete mit reichen Ornamenten. Mit diesem wunderbaren und überzeugenden Stillleben beweist Félix Vallotton dem Betrachter, wie meisterlich er es verstand, Stofflichkeit in seinen arrangierten Natures mortes sublimes umzusetzen.
Vallotton führte seit 1885 ein chronologisches Verzeichnis seiner Werke, das Livre de raison, das er bis zu seinem Tode minutiös weiterführte. Das vorliegende Gemälde beschrieb er darin als nat morte. un bocal sombre garni d'œillets d'Inde, de marguerites violettes et de gerbes d'or. sur un tapis jaune à rosaces rouges. des livres, fond Jouy violet (T 40 P).
