Condition

Faint marks of a former frame visible along the edges. Minor craquelure, most notably in the darker areas in the lower half of the painting. Some retouchings visible under uv-light, most notably along the edges and in the sky. Beforementioned craquelure to the lower half of the painting mildly restored. Good condition.

Johann Jakob Ulrich unternahm im September 1833 eine Reise an die ligurische Küste und besuchte Genua, Sestri Levante und La Spezia. Während dieser Reise entstanden Skizzen zu zwei Pendants von Sestri Levante bei Sonnenaufgang und -untergang, die Ulrich zusammen mit drei weiteren Werken 1836 zum Pariser Salon einlieferte (Kat. Nr. 1747-1751). Die beiden Sestri-Ansichten kaufte ein Pariser Mäzen Ulrichs, der Bankier Paturle, dessen Sammlung 1872 versteigert wurde. (Vgl. Hans A. Lüthy, Dissertation, Zürich 1965)
