Minor craquelure. Scattered, faint scratches to the surface.
Under uv-light scattered, minor retouchings visible, most notably near the door to the upper right.

Catalogue Note
Beim Dargestellten handelt es sich wohl um Emile Borgeaud, einen Verwandten des Malers Marius Borgeaud. Der Mann mit der weissen Zipfelmütze und der blauen Kutte soll einen Waadtländer Bauern darstellen. Auf dem Tisch neben dem Mann befinden sich ein Glas Weisswein und die Lausanner Zeitung Feuilles d’avis. Vermutlich entstand das vorliegende Gemälde anlässlich des eidgenössischen Schützenfestes von 1887 in Lausanne. Ferdinand Hodler nahm an diesem nationalen Grossanlass teil und nutzte die Gelegenheit einige Teilnehmer zu porträtieren. Das Thema des traurig blickenden Alkoholikers erinnert an Werke des Neuenburger Malers Gustave Jeanneret oder an Albert Anker. Von Anker ist das Werk "Der Trinker" von 1869 (Kunstmuseum Bern) bekannt. Zum vorliegenden Bild gibt es eine zweite Fassung, die sich im Kunsthaus Zürich befindet.
