Catalogue Note

When wandering through a city it is impossible to avoid the sight of buildings mantled in debris
netting. Be it a demolition site or a remodeling work, debris netting always conceals the project. Moreover, the netting retains the falling rubble. It creates a smooth esthetic
cover over something
that is unpredictable and changeable
on the inside. Debris netting is also semi-transparent, framing the wall behind it, but at the same time it cannot exist without the wall. The
debris netting marks out a structure
that begins to resemble a new language with content, form, and meanings that linger behind the material.

In her work Valerie Snobeck attempts to explore what it is that we build and
remodel; what is it that we remove or decide to maintain, and when is a project accomplished? In the very same way the peeled photo print behind the glass allows no direct access to the viewer as it is magically framed and concealed by the debris netting, just like a finished work of art. In her work Snobeck gradually removes one layer at a time. One is inevitably left wondering if she is out to gradually remove the entire material.
