Catalogue Note

Sometimes what looks simple and structured can conceal something highly complex. The circuit board is perhaps the symbol of complexity in our early-21st century culture. A good work of art has a purpose. But what if the circuit board becomes the starting point for a painting? This allows Analia Saban to display all the potential of the material – paint and form – in a disarming manner.

In every artwork the Argentinian artist wittily challenges existing notions of painting. Is the viewer still looking at a painting, or is this an object, or a sculpture? The experience of creating a painting becomes part of the viewer's experience of viewing the painting. Much of Saban’s work lays an emphasis structure, just like a craftsman calmly and resolutely explains his actions. By challenging the conventions of art history she tries to expose the three-dimensionality of the paintings’ structure, in search of the unexpected possibilities of the material.

Saban’s techniques have been described both as scientific and archeological, the former because of her experiment-driven search for objective truth about the nature of art, and the latter due to Saban’s curiosity and awareness for the larger societal implications of her material.
