Catalogue Note

As a multi-medium artist, Peake applies his creativity to sculpture, painting, performance, curating and choreography. In fact, Peake insists on being broadly defined as an artist rather than strictly confined to a certain practice. His focus lies in the voids existing in the process of translating explicit communication into implicit communication. Discrepancies between images, body language and sounds play a recurring role in his practice. In his performances Peake explores, amongst others, themes such as eroticism, pleasure and gender politics. His performances like to challenge the visitors by asking them to deal with the temptation of taking a close look, at the same time anticipating a feeling of embarrassment or shame for their own voyeurism.

In his stainless steel spray paintings, like the one on view, Peake uses negative space to form images and words. With masking tape he reveals the underlying polished steel support, mirroring the viewer. This represents a metaphor for language gaps in which the viewer is invited to find himself. These ‘in between’ spaces of silence have been an on-going fascination within Peake's artistic journey.
