Catalogue Note

The urban environment is a sum of
coincidental structures that control our behavior. A sidewalk is for walking. The street corner helps us change direction. A fence forces us to walk around it, like taking a walk around the block. Just as a store window draws our attention, a trash can has its own purpose. Klara Liden's work shows how people constantly navigate through an ever-changing world, creating new ways of living.

Trained as an architect, the Swedish artist Klara Liden has described her built structures as ‘un-building, re-cycling or improvising new uses for what’s already been set up’. Liden embellishes the frayed edges of urban culture and gives new life to the refuse of the streets. She creates strange structures from discarded objects and materials. Trash cans remind us of the constant process of urbanisation. It was in this maelstrom that we learnt how to behave. She explores the urban environment in which she exhibits and bends it to her own will. In a constantly changing urban landscape creativity brings forth new ways of existence.
