Catalogue Note

It is said that Alex Hubbard makes films like a painter and paintings like a sculptor. His work challenges the viewer to join him on a journey into unknown territory. It is entertaining and thrilling because it puts the viewer on the wrong foot. But the outcome is fantastic and almost breathtaking in its beauty as the image ends up in uncharted territory. Alex Hubbard increasingly began to combine oil paint with synthetic resin and fiberglass, thus creating a material that is wonderfully translucent. Whilst underlying layers remain visible, the colors mix to a beautiful effect as the viewer changes position. Synthetic resin also hardens quickly hence forcing the artist to ‘perform’ at a fast pace. As a result his paintings constantly give an account of their creation, though always remaining true to their concept of change and movement.

Hubbard gradually began to play with this concept evolving from his monochrome resin pieces to his colourful paintings with white traces, thus showing an element of performance to his trash paintings. Thereafter he explored new ways of expression through his bent paintings such as the one exhibited in the show. Challenging his practice with a whole new dimension his canvases now evolve into a three-dimensional space, thus strengthening the conversation between painting and sculpture.
