Catalogue Note

Filipp Pakhomov Matveev, a commander in the St Petersburg Light Militia in the Napoleanic War of 1812 and the Crimean Wars of 1853-1856, was singled out by Realist artists as a typical rank-and-file participant. In 1855, in recognition of the vast number of unknown militiamen who perished in defence of their Fatherland throughout these wars, the military painter V.F. Timm produced a half-length portrait of Matveev in watercolour, which was later engraved, and Kovshenkov modelled this full length figure.
