Catalogue Note

Peter the Great built this simple cottage in Reval, now Tallinn, Estonia, after his armies conquered the territory in the Great Northern War of 1700-1721. In July 1723, he wrote that 'the house is being plastered outside, but is ready within and, in one word, we have hardly anyhere such a handsome house.' See R. Massie, Peter the Great: His Life and Worlds, 1981, p. 381.
