the hinged lid engraved with the Imperial eagle centred with the cypher for Nicholas II, the sides with engraved Russian inscription 'In Fond Remembrance to the Dear Sergei Dmitrievich Nabokov / from the pilots of the 1st Field / Army Aviation Squadron / Mitava 5 July 1915', the interior of the lid with engraved signatures, 84 standard
Condition
Signs of wear and use including some scratches, shallow dents, and a 6mm tear at the right front corner. The lid sits slightly askew.

Having served as an army officer, Sergei Dmitrievich Nabokov (1868-1940) became governor of Kursk in 1915. His brother, Vladimir Dmitrievich, was a liberal newspaper editor and served with the Provisional Government in 1917. His eldest son, Vladimir Vladimirovich, would become a famous writer.
The most basic unit of the Emperor's Military Air Fleet (or Imperial Air Service, established in 1912) consisted of squadrons (otryadi) of six to ten aircraft. Mitava (Jelgava, Latvia), would have been in a strategically important position close to the Western Front at the start of the First World War.
