Catalogue Note

The sbiten vendor, or sbitenshchik, was a common figure on Russian streets for centuries.  He sold a hot spiced honey drink long popular in Russia until it was replaced by imported tea and coffee.  The comic opera The Sbiten Vendor by Yakov Knyazhnin with music by Czech composer Antoine Bullant was first produced in 1783.
