Catalogue Note

From 1927 until 1937, the Benois family would rent a large property in the south of France between July and September every year. Alexander Benois loved to work there and often painted his family at the beach of Sanary. The second two watercolours depict the house of the painter Zambozi, whom Benois used to visit en route to Lugano, and a gothic design for Debussy's unfinished one-act opera inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's 1839 novel, The Fall of the House of Usher.
