Catalogue Note
Speed, dynamism and the onset of the motorized age are recurring themes of Deineka’s work. From the 1930s onwards his landscapes juxtapose the mechanical with the natural, whether planes travelling over fields, or trains and cars through woods. The gnarled trunks and inky green canopies of the avenue and the chestnut trees in the present work bear comparison to his 1935 watercolour, The Seine Embankment, (fig.2) suggesting the present view may also have been painted in Western Europe. Having been awarded the prestigious title of 'People's Artist of the USSR' in 1963, Deineka was able to travel extensively through Europe in the 1960s, to France, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Italy, where he sketched and worked, mostly in watercolour.
