Catalogue Note

Portraiture makes up a significant part of Nicolai Fechin’s diverse oeuvre, and these intimate depictions of the human face were especially meaningful to the artist. He preferred painting the faces of people he knew, capturing their innate spirit with spontaneous brushwork and bright, vivid colours. In the present lot Fechin chooses a monochromatic background so that the brilliant blue of the sitter’s dress and the matching blue of her eyes pop from the canvas. The portrait is an exquisite example of Fechin’s work during his American period.
