Catalogue Note

The harmonious composition of varying colours and forms on display in the present still life reveal the artist’s roots in botany, which she studied in her youth, along with a deep appreciation of the natural world. Flowers, leaves and stems are beautifully arranged for maximum decorative affect while at the same time maintaining a sense of spontaneity. An intuitive understanding of colour is evident; the reds of the flowers, fruits and cigarettes balance perfectly with the greens and gold elsewhere. Vase de Fleurs et de Pommes is among her most charming still life paintings and it reflects the skill of the artist in her prime. It at the same time demonstrates an understanding of the work of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh while maintaining a sense of individuality and freedom.
