Catalogue Note

The present work is closely related to a smaller oil known as Study for Hercules and Omphale, which is believed to date from between 1913 and 1918 (Leonid Pasternak. The Russian Years, 1875-1921. A Critical Study and Catalogue, Oxford University Press, 1999, vol.1, p.47 no.203). The pose of the nude and the golden rain suggest that the myth of Danaë is a more likely subject, possibly inspired by Titian's celebrated series.
