Catalogue Note
In Nivinsky’s Crimean paintings of 1916 and 1917, one is distinctly aware of a new 'major key' in his work, 'his initial enthusiasm and the joy of an accomplished artist who confronts nature and all its wonders for the first time, and whole-heartedly plunges into its colourful kaleidoscope' (Paul Ettinger's introduction to the exhibition catalogue, Oforty Ign.Nivinskogo, Moscow: Gosudarstvenny muzei izyashchnykh iskusstv, 1925, p.10). His lively Southern landscapes are often compared to those of his fellow Soyuz artist, Sergei Vinogradov.
