Catalogue Note

Known for his drawings and illustrations of the writings by Alexander Puskin and Nikolai Gogol, Kravchenko studied painting in Moscow with Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin. During the late 1910s, his approach to colour changed and he began to experiment and would alternate intense colours so as to create contrasts within a limited  palette. In the present work the subtle variations of green and blue create a forest which completely envelops the two figures.
