Catalogue Note

Marianne de Brouwer was the daughter of Baron Jean de Brouwer, a friend and patron of Serebriakova and an important figure in the artist’s personal and professional life between 1928 and 1938. The present portrait was executed during a visit to the Brouwer family in Bruges while Serebriakova was travelling to Anvers for her 1931 exhibition. The portrait perfectly combines the artist's delicate style with the psychological portrayal of the sitter. It has remained in the family of the sitter ever since.
