Catalogue Note

The 12th century epic poem The Tale of Igor’s Campaign tells the story of Prince Igor Svyatoslavich the Brave and his futile attempts to take over the southern Don region in 1185. The story has inspired a number of Russian artists including Viktor Vasnetsov, Ivan Bilibin and the composer Alexander Borodin, who adapted it into an opera in 1890.

Stelletsy’s illustrations for the poem are characteristically intricate and dynamic, as seen in the present lot. He uses bold colours and elegant patterns to convey the dramatic scenes.
