Catalogue Note

In 1858, Jean-Pierre Moynet accompanied Alexandre Dumas on a trip to Russia and the Caucasus. He painted the present work depicting a peaceful rural community on the Volga upon his return to France the following year. It is based on a drawing, which has been published in an account of Dumas’ travels (Voyage en Russie, Edito-Service, 1970, p.11). The same drawing is also published in a book by Moynet (Cahiers Alexandre Dumas, no.33, Encrage, 2007, p.73).
