Catalogue Note

The younger brother of railway magnat Samuel Polyakov, Lazar Solomonovich Polyakov founded and owned several banks in the Russian Empire, earning him the nickname 'Rothschild of Moscow'. A well-known philanthropist, he was the leader of the Moscow Jewish community for several decades and financed the construction of the Moscow Choral Synagogue.

The present album was given by the artists to Polyakov on the occasion of the First Exhibition of Paintings by Moscow Artists which took place 1893. This exhibition formed the basis for the Moscow Association of Artists founded a few years later.
