Catalogue Note
Bugaevsky-Blagodarny graduated from the St Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1794 and was made an Academician in 1822. His portrait of fellow artist Vladimir Borovikovsky is in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, and one of Alexei Venetianov's most famous works is a portrait of Bugaevsky-Blagodarny, also at the State Tretyakov Gallery. Like many of his contemporaries, Bugaevsky-Blagodarny worked on designs and decorations for churches.
