Catalogue Note

At the end of the 19th century, Christofle was making electroplated reproductions of famous silver pieces held in major collections and museums in Europe. Simultaneously, the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, seeking to present an encyclopedic collection, opened a plaster cast studio, the Central Union of the Decorative Arts, in Paris and contracted with Christofle's electroplating factory to create a series of reproductions for sale and for display in the museum.
