Condition
This lot has a hard relining but is in good condition. Some surface dirt throughout, and so would benefit from a gentle clean. The paitn surface has a light craquelure, natural for a painting of this age. The sitter has a beautiful natural and healthy flush to her cheeks and great movement in her hair, lively details which have not lost any of their charm to fading.
Inspection under UV light shows very small old spot retouchings and infilling of craquelure, but overall this is an untouched work that has been well looked after.
This wonderful portrait is sold in a gilt frame, in good condition, and is ready to hang.

Catalogue Note
English-born Sara Anna Constable met Freiherr Dietrich von Miltitz (1769- 1853) during his travels in England and they were married in 1795. Their home, Schloß Siebeneichen, was the centre of German Romanticism in Sachsen from 1812, with poets and intellectuals including Novalis, Heinrich von Kleist and Johann Gottlieb Fichte meeting there under the group name Scharfenberger Kreis. Sara Anna von Miltitz also created a 87 acre traditional English park at Schloß Siebeneichen, the first of its kind in Sachsen.
