Provenance
Acquired at auction in Hamburg, by the ancestors of the present owner through Johann Noodt in 1818;
Thence by descent.
Condition
The picture is more muted in tone and less acidic in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has not been lined and paint surface is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for some very minor scuffing caused by frame abrasion at the top edge. There is also evidence of some old retouching visible in the sky under a raking light. There is scattered surface dirt and a varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the aforementioned retouching and reveals some further minor areas of strengthening in the darker pigments which includes some retouching to what may be some old scattered areas of damage or abrasion in the foreground shadows however these do not compromise the integrity of the picture. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.
