Description

  • Jan van Huchtenburg
  • Cavalry battle scene
  • signed lower left: Hugtenburg .
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Count Adolf of Wallmoden-Gimborn (1794 - 1825), from whom acquired by the ancestor of the present owner in 1819;

Thence by descent.

Condition

The picture is slightly richer in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas is unlined and the paint surface is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or lsos of paint except for a minor knock upper centre above the red coat which has led to a minor paint loss. Otherwise the picture is in good country house condition but for a discoloured varnish. Examination under ultraviolet reveals a campaign of old retouching visible to the left most stretcher barmark and to the clouds centre left but the varnish otherwise impedes inspection. Offered unframed.
