Description

  • Chest with putti and satyr's head mounts
  • tortoiseshell veneer on a wood core, with silver and gilt bronze mounts, velvet lined
  • Flemish, circa 1700

Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is good with wear and some dirt to the surface consistent with age, including the lining. There is some discolouration to the tortoiseshell including at the front and lid. Some sections of the tortoiseshell were probably inserted later, particularly around the lower edges. There is some stable splitting to the tortoiseshell veneer, particularly around the hinges. There is some rubbing to the bronze and tarnishing and some denting to the silver appliques. There are remnants of wax on the underside.
