Condition
This work is full of energy and detail, which is lost in the small reproduction in the catalogue.
The canvas is in need of some general conditioning. The canvas is relined and the relining is in good condition. There is some damage to horizontal lines parallel to the lower and right edges, with small areas of lost paint which have been repaired. A general clean and conditioning would bring out a lot in this work. Plenty of movement and energy in the brushtrokes has been preserved, particularly in the touches of highlights and the very free contours of the folds of clothing. Certain parts are particularly beautiful, such as the profile of the mother on the right hand side and the hands of the many figures. Inspection under Ultraviolet light reveals infilling of craquelure, the repair of areas of damage left side centre, upper edge to the right, and the aforementioned lines of lost paint along the lower and right hand edges. There has been some minor restoration to the Virgin's blue veil on the left hand side.
This lot is sold in a plain black frame, slightly loosening on the corner joints, this can easily be tightened.
