Description
- Adrianus Johannes Ehnle
- Graaf Johannes van den Bosch
- signed A J Ehnle lower left
- oil on canvas
- 88 by 71cm., 34½ by 28in.
Condition
The canvas has been relined. There is a pattern of fine craquelure overall which is not particularly visually distracting. Under ultraviolet the old varnish fluoresces quite opaquely, obscuring a clear reading of the surface, however only some scattered small spots and minor thin lines of retouching are visible, notably in the figure's collar and in his right hand. There appears to be a minor circa 4cm wide repaired tear in the upper left quadrant in the background, and possibly another in the upper right (the latter does not fluoresce clearly under U.V. light). This painting is in good overall condition.
The colours are more luminous than in the catalogue illustration, notably the figure's flesh tones.
Held in a decorative gilt frame.

Catalogue Note
Graaf van den Bosch, 1780-1844, was Governor-general of the Dutch East Indies and Minister of the Colonies. In his hand he holds a scroll bearing the inscription Frederiksoord den 20 may 1829 J van den Bosch and to the left a map on whose spine is written NIEUWEKAART van het Eiland JAVA. The present work is a copy after the painting by Cornelis Kruseman in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, most probably painted while Ehnle was a pupil in Kruseman's studio.
