Description

  • Joseph Hickel
  • Portrait of Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790)
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Provenance

Dr. Pfeuffer (according to an inscription on the stretcher bar).

Condition

This work appears less yellow in tone than the catalogue reproduction suggests. The canvas has been relined. There is some damage to the lower edge of the canvas due to earlier frame rubbing. This will be easily hidden when the work is framed. The paint surface is generally in good stable condition. It has an old uneven varnish and a few areas of repainting in the upper background. There is a thin craquelure and one lost fleck of paint in the sitter's green jacket and in the background grey to the right of the sitter, both very minor and earily retouched with a dab of paint. The details of the freely painted lace around his neck and the decorations on his jacket are very well- preserved and enjoyable. Inspection under UV light shows retouching in the green jacket and a small amount of very old retouching to the sitter's face. This lot is offered unframed, as shown.
