Description

  • Georg Wenceslaus von Knobelsdorff
  • Portrait of King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia (1688-1740)
  • oil on canvas

Condition

This painting is slightly darker in tone than the catalogue reproduction suggests. The canvas is unlined, and there are very faint stretcher marks seen under raking light. The paint later is still thick but would benefit from a general conditioning. The thick crquelure has been sabilized and infilled. There is some bitumizing of paint to the lft and around the face. Colours in the background are wonderfully varied with moving fluid shades that contrast beautifully with the solidity of the important sitter. Inspection under UV light shows some retouching on the sitter's face and around his eyes, repair around the edges of the canvas, and old and newer infilling of craquelure. This lot is offered in a moulded frame that required some simple cosmetic repairs, but is structurally sound.
