Catalogue Note

This photograph captures Dylan at his historic July 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival, a performance that forever changed his career, creating the dividing line between his original incarnation as a folksinger and his emergence as an artist of an entirely new kind.  The young photographer Bob Gruen talked his way into the festival, equipped with a press pass provided by a family friend, his camera, and several rolls of Kodachrome film.  The importance of Dylan’s performance was immediately apparent to Gruen.  It marked, as he later commented, the moment when Dylan proved that rock and roll was the folk music of America.
