Description
- Weegee
- 'THE CRITIC'
- Gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, reduction and other notations in pencil in the margin, Acme Newspictures, Inc., and St. Paul Sunday Pioneer Press credit and use stamps, and typed credit and caption on the reverse, 1943, printed no later than 1945 (Weegee's New York, pl. 213, variant cropping)
Condition
The dated, typed caption on the reverse of this print indicates that this photograph was made no later than 1945 (negative 1943). This ferrotyped print, on double-weight paper with a heavy glossy surface, is in generally very good condition. Its fine condition is remarkable not only given the number of hands it likely passed through as indicated by the use stamps and caption on the reverse, but also in comparison to other early Weegee prints, which generally exhibit a higher degree of wear and creases from heavy handling.
Occasional pitting, long superficial scuffs and scratches, and fingerprints are visible in raking light. Impressions from writing on the reverse of the print are also visible in raking light. There are a number of small sharp creases, some of which may break the emulsion. The margin corners are lightly creased. In the lower margin, the following is written in blue pencil: '[ ] 3/4 x 4.'
There is light soiling from handling on the reverse. 'Metropolitan Opera' and 'Save (J[ ])' are written in pencil and '1' (circle) is written in red pencil on the reverse.
The typed caption affixed to the reverse reads:

The Critic
She is aghast at the quantity of dia-monds in evidence at a war-time opening of the Met, but the bejeweled ladies are aware only of Weegee's clicking camera.
