Description

  • Margaret Bourke-White
  • 'AERIAL VIEW OF MANHATTAN FROM NORTH'
  • Gelatin silver print
warm-toned with black ink borders, title and annotations in pencil on the reverse, framed, circa 1930

Condition

This pleasingly warm-toned early print is on double-weight paper with a slight texture and sheen. Upon very close examination, uneven silvering is visible in the lower right quadrant as are a few stray deposits of ink. There is a tiny nick in the left-central portion of the image, which is only visible upon extremely close examination. The faint tiny dots in the sky area appear to be in the negative and not features of the print. Bourke-White's characteristic black ink borders are lightly rubbed at the edges. On the reverse of the print are the following annotations in an unidentified hand in pencil: 'NYC'; 'MAW# 35' [circled]; '178' [circled]; 'V. III from M. B.'; and '16' [in blue pencil]. There are occasional fingerprints and some black ink deposits on the reverse.
